Oil cooler is one of the most proficient heat exchanger, specifically utilized to radicate excessive amount of heat from an internal combustion engine. Mainly used to cool high-performance motorcycle or car engines that are not water-cooled and offers great lubrication to the engine. An oil cooler is a small radiator that efficiently works in the vehicles engine cooling system in order to help in dipping the fluid in the transmission of the engine of the vehicle.
Justifying its name, the oil cooler cool downs the oil as it passes through all the coils which helps in keeping the maintenance at a consistent, optimal temperature. It plays a vital role in the smooth functioning of a vehicle engine by diffusing the heat generated while transporting oil away from the moving parts of the engine into the oil pan. It functions only when the vehicles are in action because that is the only time the heat gets generated in the engine of the vehicle.

In air cooled oil coolers, the metal fins are situated around the tubes that carry the oil of the engine. The other design is stacked-plate design that forces the oil through a huge number of plates, with heat extracted as the air moves across these plates in the best possible manner. This design setup transmits fluid that is cooled because of the heat that gets collected to the colder part of the engine that is surrounded by the coolant. To attain the best cooling results, an oil cooler works optimally when attached in front of other car parts like the radiator of the engine, as it subjects to an unbarred source of cool air. This provides the engine with much cooler fluid to return back to the transmission case of the vehicle engine. In many of the cases these oil coolers can be found combined within the water radiator of the vehicle engine.
The oil coolers also experience massive failures, which occur in some severe cases where oil cannot disperse its collected heat swiftly and also rises past this verge. As the cooler begins to collapse, oil begins to lose its greasing, lubrication and cooling properties. When the transmission oil gets overheated in the engine of the vehicle, it can lead to slower down the functioning of the vehicle in many ways like; gear changing facility, accelerating power, worn seals, lower mileage break down, and a lower possible top speed as compared to the early functioning of the vehicle.
One of the most recognizable marks of oil cooler failure is the physical distension of the radiator of the engine and its pipes. Thick black noxious smoke is one of the other evident signs of failing oil cooler. The oil cooler may have leaked oil abruptly into the combustion chambers of the engine. Vibration also is one of the major and most visible symptoms of failed oil cooler, especially if oil is getting into the combustion chambers of the vehicle engine. This assures the cooler to cause mismatched explosions in the various cylinders of the engine, making the engine vibrate out abruptly out of its sync with its proper firing rate.
